Remember the Titans
In 1981, a group of former football coaches and players attend a funeral for a former football player.
Ten years earlier, in the summer of 1971, head coach Bill Yoast of the newly integrated T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, is leading his white players in summer workouts. Yoast is informed that Herman Boone, a Black head coach originally hired to coach the city’s black high school football team, has been assigned to his coaching staff instead. Then, in an attempt to placate rising racial tensions and the fact that all other high schools in Alexandria are “whites only” (despite the abolition of racial segregation in public schools), the school district decides to name Boone the head coach. Boone refuses, believing it is unfair to Yoast, a successful coach who is nominated to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, but relents after seeing what it means to the Black community. When Yoast tells his white players that he will accept a head-coach position elsewhere, they pledge to boycott the team if he is not their coach. Dismayed at the prospect of the students losing their chances at scholarships, Yoast changes his mind and decides to accept Boone’s offer to serve as his defensive coordinator.
Boone holds his first team meeting with mostly Black students in the school gymnasium but is interrupted by the arrival of Yoast and several white students. Yoast informs Boone of his decision, but Boone warns Yoast that the Titans are his team, and he will not tolerate Yoast undermining him. On August 15, the players go to Gettysburg College for training camp. Early on, the Black and white team members frequently clash in racially motivated conflicts, especially between defensive captains Gerry Bertier (white) and Julius Campbell (Black). However, through forceful coaching, rigorous training, and a motivational early-morning run to the Gettysburg National Cemetery followed by an emotional speech by Boone, the team comes together and returns as a united group. Before their first game, Boone is told by a member of the school board that if he loses even a single game, he will be dismissed. Subsequently, the Titans go through the season undefeated while battling racial prejudice and slowly gaining support from the community.
Just before the state semi-finals, Yoast is told by the chairman of the school board that they have arranged for the Titans to lose so that Boone will be dismissed and Yoast reinstated as head coach. During the game, the referees make several biased calls against the Titans. Upon seeing the chairman and other board members in the audience looking on with satisfaction, Yoast marches onto the field to warn the head referee that if the game is not officiated fairly, he will expose the scandal to the press. After this, the Titans shut out their opponents and advance to the state championship, but Yoast is told by the infuriated chairman that his actions in saving Boone’s job have resulted in the loss of his Hall of Fame nomination.
That night, while celebrating the victory, Gerry is severely injured in a car accident and is paralyzed from the waist down. Despite the loss of the All-American linebacker, the Titans mount a comeback in the fourth quarter of the state championship and win the title.
Ten years later, after he has won the gold medal in shot put in the Paralympic Games, Gerry dies in another car crash caused by a drunk driver. It is his funeral that the former football coaches and players were attending in the opening scene. Julius, whom Gerry’s mother formerly disliked, is now holding her hand as he leads the team in a mournful rendition of “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”.
In the epilogue, descriptions show the players’ and coaches’ activities after the events in 1971. Coach Boone coached the Titans for five more seasons before retirement, while Coach Yoast assisted Boone for four more years, retiring from coaching in 1990; the two coaches became good friends. After Gerry’s death, the gymnasium at T.C. Williams High was renamed after him. Julius would work for the city of Alexandria and remain friends with Gerry until his death.

Flight Risk
U.S. Marshal Madolyn Harris arrests Winston, an accountant, while he is hiding in Alaska after turning informant against his former employer, the Moretti crime family. Madolyn charters a small airplane to take them to Anchorage so they can transfer to New York City, where she intends for Winston to testify against mobster Moretti. They are piloted by Daryl Booth, a Texan living in Alaska, who explains that the aircraft’s radio and GPS is regularly out of order.
While shackled in the middle of the plane, Winston spots Daryl’s pilot license under the seat in front of him, noticing that the photograph is a different person from “Daryl.” He tries to warn Madolyn, who has a headset on and cannot hear him. After a brief conversation with Madolyn, “Daryl” mentions how she will go to Seattle after reaching Anchorage. He should not have known this, thus he reveals himself to be a hitman using Daryl’s identity with orders to kill Winston. Madolyn manages to subdue him with a taser, and takes over piloting the plane.
Using her satellite phone, Madolyn explains the situation to her direct superior, Caroline Van Sant. Caroline tells her that Winston must be kept alive if Moretti is to be brought to justice. Winston had skimmed $1 million from the Moretti crime family during his time working for them. Caroline tells Madolyn that the real Daryl Booth had been tortured to death by “Daryl,” and that she will arrange for another pilot to call her to help navigate them to safety.
Madolyn begins to grow suspicious of Caroline when “Daryl” knows information about her past that he should not have known–information that could only have come from the Marshals. Thus, Madolyn begins to suspect that Caroline is the leak to the mob. Madolyn then gets in touch with FBI Director Coleridge to explain her suspicions. However, Coleridge gives himself away as being on Moretti’s payroll when he mentions his beach house, since Winston recognizes that a past request for payment came from a URL in that city. This puts Caroline’s life in danger, since Coleridge needs her to take the fall for any suspicions, lest he becomes a suspect.
“Daryl” wakes up, shackled to the overhead rack, and taunts Winston, promising to make him suffer, as well as to kill his mother, whose address he knows. He also reveals that Madolyn had been put on desk duty for several years after her neglect had caused the death of a witness in her custody during her last field mission; Madolyn permitted the witness to take a shower unsupervised, albeit handcuffed, when their motel room was firebombed by a cartel hitman, and Madolyn fled while forgetting the witness could not escape.
Hassan, a pilot on the ground in Anchorage, calls Madolyn and teaches her how to steer the plane; he also calms her and says they will go drinking and dancing when she lands safely. “Daryl” manages to free himself from his handcuffs and attacks the pair. He stabs Winston twice and begins to strangle Madolyn with the seatbelt. She is about to pass out when Winston removes the knife from his chest and cuts the belt, allowing Madolyn to shoot “Daryl” with a flare gun, incapacitating him at the back of the plane. When Coleridge calls Madolyn and tells her that Caroline has been killed in a car accident, she vows to bring him down alongside Moretti. A US Navy F/A-18 Hornet meets the plane to escort it to the airport.
With Winston now in dire need of medical attention, Hassan guides Madolyn into landing the plane as quickly as possible, which burns through their remaining fuel supply. On the approach, “Daryl” regains consciousness, almost degloves his hand in order to extract it from the handcuffs, and attacks again. He is shot by Madolyn and thrown off the plane, where he is run over by an ambulance, as Madolyn manages a successful crash landing.
Winston is rushed into an ambulance by the ground crew as Madolyn is greeted by Hassan. Madolyn notices that a suspicious-looking paramedic has entered the ambulance, and she quickly makes her way to the ambulance, finding that the fake paramedic is using a plastic bag to smother Winston. Madolyn shoots the paramedic before he can kill Winston. Madolyn picks up the paramedic’s phone, revealing him as a hitman acting under orders from Coleridge, who is on the other end of the line. She tells Coleridge that he is finished, before sharing a caring moment with Winston, who smiles wanly.

Private Benjamin (1980)
Judy Benjamin, a 28-year-old Jewish woman from a sheltered wealthy upbringing whose lifelong dream is to “marry a professional man”, is devastated after Yale Goodman, her new husband, dies on their wedding night. Emotionally adrift, Judy tells her story on a radio call-in show and meets another caller, Army recruiter SFC James Ballard, who leads her to believe military life will provide the “family” she seeks. He also pitches the service as a getaway, comparing it to a spa vacation, but Judy has a rude awakening upon arriving at basic training; realizing the recruiter conned her, she wants to quit but is astonished to find out, contrary to the assertions of her recruiting sergeant, that she cannot leave.
Army regulations and the disapproval of Captain Doreen Lewis and Sergeant First Class L.C. Ross, the drill sergeant, frustrate Judy. However, when her parents arrive at Fort Biloxi to take her home, she decides to stay and finish basic training. Judy completes her training after a war games exercise in which she leads her squad in capturing the opposing team. Upon graduation from basic training, Judy and her friends spend the weekend on leave in New Orleans, where she meets Henri Tremont, a French doctor attending a medical conference. After a brief but inspiring romance, Henri returns to Paris, and Judy begins training with an elite paratrooper unit, the Thornbirds.
Judy quickly discovers that she was chosen for paratrooper training because unit commander Colonel Thornbush finds her attractive. Because she is too scared to jump after the other trainees have jumped from the plane, he attempts to sexually assault her. When Judy jumps out of the plane rather than comply, he attempts to have her transferred. Judy negotiates an assignment to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium, and meets up with Henri again on a visit to Paris. He proposes marriage, and she accepts. After Captain Lewis discovers that Tremont is a communist, Judy is forced to choose between the Army and love.
Following his engagement to Judy, Henri reveals his self-centered, controlling nature. He tries to “remake” Judy and insists she sign a prenuptial agreement. Finally, when Henri sleeps with the housemaid and makes it obvious that he has not gotten over his ex-girlfriend Clare, Judy has a change of heart. On the day of the wedding ceremony, she punches Henri and abandons him at the altar, throws her bridal veil into the wind, and walks alone into the unknown, empowered by her newfound freedom.
